There is no magic solution, but these quick tips can help you overcome ageism in your job search:
- Resume – Ensure your resume format is up-to-date and only provides the previous 10 to 15 years of experience. Keep your resume to two pages in a classic format.
- Networking – Be sure you have an up-to-date and accurate profile on LinkedIn. Set aside designated time on your calendar for networking activities, whether LinkedIn, professional conferences, or networking events. Networking is a valuable source for job searches.
- Appearance – Make a video of yourself on your phone to see how you are presenting professionally. Ask friends for feedback.
- Interview Skills – Practice, practice, and more practice. Be prepared with answers about yourself and your accomplishments, knowledge of the company and the industry, and the questions you will ask.
- Follow-Up – Be sure to send a follow-up communication to the interviewers.
- Confidence – One of the most important exercises is to really examine and take pride in your achievements, your experience, and what you bring to the table for this employer. Most of us under-estimate what we have learned and contributed, so sit down and write out all of the accomplishments you can share.
